In order to keep going when I feel discouraged and overwhelmed I need an action plan. Something tangible to do that helps me take another step. The problem is I don’t know what to do; that’s why I’m discouraged and overwhelmed in the first place. But the solution is simple: pour out my heart to God.
I love the psalms where God’s people cry out in pain, frustration, and despair. In these heart-felt, anguished cries, recorded as part of God’a Word, that I know I can truly be myself in front of God. I don’t have to pretend everything is fine. God listens. He understands. Most importantly, He cares.
Psalm 13: David Pours Out His Heart
How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?
Overwhelmed, discouraged, and weary. Not just because he’s struggling. David wants help from God and doesn’t feel God is listening. He pleads with God to come to his rescue.
In pouring out his heart, David remembers the truth about God that will help him persevere in the midst of his pain. No matter the circumstance or the outcome on earth, David knows he is loved by God. And ultimately, he will be saved.
My Action Plan
Prayer-honest, from the heart prayer-is my action plan. Pour out my heart. Don’t hold back. Tell God my frustration and fear. Let Him know I don’t think I can go any further.
Remember the truth. God loves me. My heart can rejoice in His unfailing love.
Adore Him. Sing praises, for He has been good to me.
Yearn for more of God. He is all I need.
Pour out your heart to God. Be honest with Him. And then rejoice in His love and care for you.
