As a fan of spy thrillers, I picked up Breaking Cover: My Secret Life in the CIA and What It Taught Me by Michele Rigby Assad, with anticipation. This book promised to give a realistic look inside the life of a CIA operative. It lived up to my expectations.

Life in the CIA

Michele Rigby Assad and her husband Joseph served in the CIA for ten years in the dangerous Middle East. They were counter-terrorism expert analysts, interviewing men who claimed they had information that could help stop terrorists. Reading her memoir gave me the opportunity to see behind the scenes, through her application and training process and into the everyday life an undercover CIA agent. Assad shares the fears, excitement, and boredom of doing a job most know little about.

Throughout her story, Assad weaves in how God directed her from throughout her life. She shares how God used struggles and difficulties to help her grow into the woman He created her to be.

…the struggle to hone my craft and the struggle to triumph over a myriad of obstacles created the conditions for something beautiful to emerge-a woman fully equipped and completely reliant on God.

After the CIA

After serving in the CIA for ten years, Michele and Joseph decided to leave. She includes the story of finding purpose in life after the CIA. The Assads adventure of helping displaced Christians, forced out of their homes and threatened with death to self and family kept me riveted in their story.

Michele Assad considers herself to be a common, everyday person. Her story is inspirational as she reminds her readers,

God doesn’t require well-connected or influential people to do his work here on earth. . . What he does need are men and women who are completely open to him, people who don’t put conditions on their commitment. . .God isn’t looking for perfection. He is seeking men and women with faith greater than their fear.

Not only do I thank Michele Rigby Assad for her service but for writing this behind the scenes book.
