Everywhere I look, I see flags waving proudly. The United States celebrates independence on July 4, 242 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted, and a new nation was born. Freedom is always associated with the great country I love. Our freedoms are guaranteed in the laws of our land.
But the real freedom every person longs for is never found in the law. True freedom comes only from God through His Son, Jesus.
Freedom from Condemnation
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. (Romans 6:22)
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)
Jesus willingly took it upon Himself to take every sin, past, present, and future, and pay the penalty in our stead. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we are free of the burden of sin. Forever. Our future changes from death to eternal life in the presence of God. All we long for now will be ours for eternity.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. (Revelation 21:4)
Freedom from the Burden of Sin
Satan prowls like a hungry lion, waiting to devour us (1 Peter 5:8). He continually tempts us, lies about our abilities, tries to fill us with fear and doubt. But Jesus says we can combat Satan’s lies with truth, and the truth will free us.
If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. (John 8:31-32)
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (John 8:36)
While we will continue to face hardships and challenges while we still walk the earth, our hope in Christ frees of from fear. When Satan attacks, turn to God’s Word. Live in it. The reassurance, peace, and hope you long for is right there.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by the yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)
Freedom to Approach God
In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. (Ephesians 3:12)
Because of Jesus, God is not distant. We can boldly approach God with anything. While we can’t see His face, we can be confident He listens. No matter what we do or how far we stray, God waits patiently for us. He created us for fellowship with Him. We can come to Him with anything, problems, questions, and fears. He welcomes us, encourages, comforts, and helps.
As you look around at the red, white, and blue everywhere, thank God for our nation, yes. But rejoice in the freedom you have in Christ. When you lift your eyes to watch the firework displays, see beyond them to the heavens. Fix your eyes on your Savior. The Son has set you free, and you are free indeed.
