A few days ago, I needed to get away from the daily grind of the mundane chores of laundry and cleaning the same counter and making lunch. And I felt useless. Van and my brother-in-love, David, were preparing the backyard for our patio extension. They pounded stakes, put in drains, and moved what seemed like acres of rocks and dirt. My sister-in-love, Judy, worked right beside them.
Not me. I stayed in the house, providing lunch and lots of water. But I didn’t pick up a shovel to help. So one morning, after making sure there was plenty of water in the cooler and lunch in the fridge, I escaped. I took my own lunch, my beach chair, and my travel bag of devotional tools and set off for one of our local lakes.
The sun warmed my back and I spent time simply enjoying the beauty of God’s creation. After lunch, though, I tucked my book back in its bag and decided to explore a little. The pink flowered tree I saw on the other side of the lake intrigued me, and I wanted to see it up close.
As I walked, not only did I thank God for the beauty of His creation, but I meditated on what I had read in His Word. Don’t you love it when God seems to reach down and illustrate His Word? As I walked around the lake, I could almost hear Him whisper lessons I needed right then, directly from that morning’s devotion time.
Persevere when You Feel Lost or Alone
At one point, I veered away from the lake itself and into the trees. I enjoyed the whisper of the wind, the crunch of pine needles under my feet, and the symphony of birdsong. But after a while, I worried a little. Even though I was careful to stay on the trail, I couldn’t see the lake anymore. Don’t be silly, I admonished myself. Follow the trail. The lake isn’t far! Keep going. You’ll see it in a minute.
Jesus Never Leaves Us
Sure enough, just around the next bend, I saw the lake peeking through the trees.
It hadn’t moved; only I had. Away from what I needed to feel secure. As soon as I could see the lake again, I knew where I needed to go.
He Sustains My Soul
My spiritual life is like that sometimes. I wander aimlessly, looking at the glitter of the world, enticed by its temporary beauty. In the hustle and busyness of trying to get things done, I rush through my time with God. Some days, I choose Facebook or chores, moving away from the One thing I need to sustain my soul. Jesus.
And like the lake, Jesus is right there. He never leaves us. What I thirst for is Him. Time with Him. Nothing fancy. Just coming to Jesus, who promised, “and the one who believes in Me [as Savior] will never be thirsty [for that one will be sustained spiritually].” (John 6:35 AMP) He is the One who sustains my soul.
Talking to Him in prayer and listening to Him talk to me through His Word, quenches my deepest desires and meets my greatest needs.
What do you need from Jesus today? Spend time with Him. He will refresh your soul.
