For longer than I can remember the magic of words woven together to tell stories captivated me. My first sentence was, “Read me a book,” and my wonderful mother did just that. Reading always ranks first on my list of things I love to do. I need to read as much as I need to breathe.
Reading transports me into the lives of people I’ll never meet and lets me visit places I’ll never see. Throughout the journey, my horizons and experiences expand beyond the pages.
My own life melts away while I lose myself in someone else’s story. But the story always ends, and I close the book, back in my own world.
The worlds I encounter and enjoy through reading provide enjoyment and distraction, but always temporarily. They don’t sustain in the every day plodding of my own life, or provide help or hope long-term. The words that capture my attention in stories fall short of meeting my deepest needs and desires.
There is only one Word I can count on for what I truly long for: unconditional love, hope, joy, and peace. For live-giving, soul-refreshing, unwavering truth, I need God’s Word. His Word must permeate my mind, my heart, and my soul.
The Word I truly need as much as I need to breathe tells me I can have the joy, peace, and abundance of life I long for. If I abide in His Word.
If you abide in my word you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free (John 8: 31).
Abide. Remain. Stay with all the time. Cling to.
Abide in Him and He will abide in me. Apart from Him, I can do nothing. (John 15 5)
Abide in Him and He gives me His joy. He makes my joy full. (John 15:11)
Abide in Him and I bear much fruit. Good fruit. Fruit I can share with others who also need His life-changing,life-giving, abundant peace and joy and hope. And love. Probably my favorite: As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love (John 15:9)
Abide in Him because He freely chose to give me grace (my one word in 2013).
Abide in Him because unless I abide, I cannot glorify (my one word in 2014).
Abide will be my one word for 2015.
As I try to abide in Him this year, I will post updates on what I learn. Links to those blog posts will be listed here:
