My Special God Place

My Favorite Place

If you ask me what my favorite place is, I’ll answer the beach. San Clemente to be exact. There are few places that fill me with as much joy. The sight of the many blues and greens and grays the water holds. Palm trees reaching up into a sky so blue it takes my breath away. Pelicans soaring and diving. Kids shrieking and laughing as the water laps at their toes. The water lapping and crashing on the shore. Seagulls crying “Mine! Mine! Mine!” I spend part of the day sitting in my chair, breathing in the sights and smells, reading, staring at the beauty everywhere and thinking my own thoughts. Then I wander, sticking my toes in the water and feeling the champagne like bubbly foam. Finally I gather my things and go to the restaurant on the pier to watch the sun sparkle on the water, leaving a trail of light as the sun goes down, turning the sky brilliant shades of pink and orange.

At this special place, I feel close to God. I see Him everywhere in His creation. He fills my heart to overflowing with praise and thanksgiving. When I feel downhearted, I head to the beach. Somehow, in the depths of sorrow or anxiety, I focus better on the truth of who God is. I listen more closely when I meet God at the beach.

Finding a New Place

Soon I’ll leave the beach behind. No ocean in Arizona. Lakes, yes. They hold their own beauty. But it won’t be the same. And that’s OK. God doesn’t call me to one place.

That’s one of the beauties and mysteries of God; unlike me, He isn’t limited to time or place. Wherever I go, He’s there. Even when I get stuck in traffic, God is there. Reachable. Listening.

I don’t have to be at the beach. Standing at the kitchen sink. In front of my computer. Sitting on my front porch. On the shore of the ocean or in a kayak on the lake, God is with me.

I look forward to exploring my new community. I know without a doubt someplace will become my special God place.

Where is your special God place? I’d love to have you share with me in the comments.

I am a child of God, seeking to trust Him in every joy and sorrow. Sharing my walk is my husband, Van. God blessed me with two beautiful daughters and three delightful grandchildren. I teach seventh grade English and History, love to read and bake cookies, watch the birds in my backyard, and the ocean.

    1. Julie, So many of us feel close to God when we’re outside, in His creation. One of the things I will miss when I move to Arizona, is the ocean. But I know I can meet God anywhere.

  1. Lovely pictures Debbie and a beautiful reminder that God is always near. Being disabled, I do not get out as much as I’d like, but I too see God everywhere when I do step outside. In the beautiful cumulus clouds, or as I feel the sun warming my face. I love my time of communing with Him just outside my office. It is a place where He speaks with me and I look forward to hearing from Him as I seek His wisdom. It is such a pleasure to “meet” you here today via G&T. I hope you have an amazing weekend and may God continue to bless you and yours.

    1. Thank you, Horace. We don’t have to go anywhere to be in a special place with God. Praying He speaks to you as you spend time with Him this week.

  2. I love the mountains – the Rockies in Colorado. I’m there at the moment and can see them from my window. They remind me of God’s majesty and reassuring greatness.

    1. Thanks for sharing, Rachel. The mountains are a special place for me too. My family went to Yosemite every summer when I was growing up. One of the verses I wrote in my new home-near the window that gives a view of the mountains-is Psalm 121:1-2, “I lift my eyes up to the mountains. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord.”

  3. I love the beach, too, Debbie. Sunrises are my favorite … but like you, I enjoy God’s beauty in many places. When He’s there (which is everywhere), even our kitchen sink can be our “God place”. Thanks for your beautiful words today! (And your beautiful pictures!)

  4. Hi Debbie, this is so beautifully written it draws me to the beach. We will go as a family next week, and I am looking forward to all of it. Must say I have become more of a mountain girl as I age. Just a preference though, Jesus is with us everywhere . May God bless, Julie, visiting from.FMF

  5. Hi, Debbie. San Clemente is a lovely lovely place. Yosemite has always been my God place. I haven’t been since 2009 but whenever I think of a place that’s where my thoughts go. Each summer our family visited and it was the long hikes up to the falls that birthed in me my love for this place. BUT, yes, it doesn’t matter where you are, God’s place is in you.

    1. Growing up, my family went to Yosemite every summer. It is definitely a special place for me, but since I live in southern California, the beach is so much more accessible.

  6. I love the beach too. It’s such a peaceful place and yet wild and awesome. I also love being in my garden. I feel close to the Lord there. Love that He is with us wherever we are!

I’m visiting from the ‘Faith on Fire’ link-up.

    1. Raised near the beach, and nearly 50 years of living in the Midwest later, I still crave beach time exactly as you described it. As obvious as it may sound, one of my favorite God places is in the quietness of His worship places. But, you are so right, Debbie, God loves being with His children wherever they are. Thanks for beautifully sharing a little mental vacation this morning.

    2. Andrew, bless you for reading and responding in the midst of your intense suffering this week. Praying for you.

Thank you for joining me on my journey with God in uncharted water. Please let me know how He is working in your life.
