Excuse me if my Christmas joy before Thanksgiving bothers you. That when I tell you there are 38 days until Christmas, you cringe and panic a little. But I can tell you when there are 364 days. 222 days. 100 days. 87.
Christmas isn’t a day for me. Or a season. It’s an attitude of the heart. I look forward to December all year long. Everywhere I look, I see reminders of God’s greatest gift.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16, NIV).
And it fills me with joy. From the top of my head to the tips of my toes.
I suppose I could let the commercialization bother me. Some of it, like the commercials where parents push their children aside trying to get to their new car, does. But instead of frowning and grumbling, I choose a thankful heart. I pray my attitude while I’m out and about brings a little of my joy to others.
While I enjoy the decorations, gifts, and music, I love celebrating God’s gift through the tradition of Advent most of all. Just like I jumped on the gratitude bandwagon in November, I’m joining others who write about Advent in December. Beginning November 28, my focus will be on the people involved in Christmas: the prophets, angels, Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, wise men, and Jesus Himself.
Please excuse my Christmas joy in the middle of November. I count it as something to be thankful for all year. There may be 38 days until Christmas day, but only seven days until December 1, the day I start celebrating Advent. I promise to keep mention of Christmas quiet until next week.
I hope you #chooseathankfulheart as you celebrate Thanksgiving this week and as you look forward to celebrating the gift of Jesus with joy.
