My eyes return to the plaque on the hearth over and over again. Every time I read the words, my face, and heart smile. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure (Hebrews 6:19).

Doing laundry, I see God’s reminder of who I am because He loves me: Blessed, chosen, pursued, forgiven, defended, accepted, free, delightful, valuable, strong, victorious, irreplaceable, redeemed, secure, carried, known. You Are Loved.

On my desk, Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand (Isaiah 41:10 NLT). And Life is full of blessings (Psalm 103:5 NLT)

Topping my bookcase, Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth (Psalm 100:1)

My morning coffee cup says You have filled my heart with greater joy (Psalm 4:7).

The Need to Return to God

I need these reminders, scattered throughout my world. My Spiritual ADD too often removes my attention from God and pulls it to whatever distraction captures my attention at the moment. An email or text, household chores, the chocolate chip cookies calling my name.

Or like yesterday, when Van asked me to drop what I was doing and come to help him for just a minute, irritation bloomed. “Doesn’t he know I have things to do too?” I grumbled to myself. Starting out the door, I captured a glimpse of the sign over my pantry, Grace.

I exhaled, “Forgive me, God, for selfishness disguised as irritation. Inhaled, “Fill me with Your grace and gratitude. Van’s doing the back-breaking work of moving yards of gravel, preparing to enlarge our tiny patio. I can help him with a smile.”

The Desire to Return to God

I desire to stay connected to Jesus every moment, but the reality is I need to return my attention to Him over and over. And these little reminders help. Just like the distractions that pull me away from God, these reminders draw me back to Him. Whether I need a grateful attitude, a dose of hope in a time of struggle, to cultivate the Fruit of the Spirit, these tangible signs get my attention and return my mind and heart to God.
