The granite dells captivated me every time we drove by. I longed to capture these huge boulders on my camera but we never stopped to look. The different formations looked like God played with unusually shaped building blocks, stacking one lumpy rock on another, giant sculptures decorated with trees crowning the top and jutting out the sides. We marveled that the trees managed to grow through the solid granite. Between the crevices of the rocks, the tree roots twisted and turned, finding the life-giving water of the lake.

The trees thrived, their leaves green and lush, rustling in the gentle breeze. Nothing to fear on the hottest of days, providing shade and food for the birds and animals that lived close by.

I want to be like those trees. Planted firmly on the solid rock of Christ, roots spread to the life-giving water. Nothing to fear because I know without a doubt He provides everything I need.

When the wind blows, the roots keep me standing, clinging to the Rock. Because those roots have constant access to the living water, even on the hottest days of summer or in the middle of a drought, my leaves green, and lush.

Those days, weeks, sometimes years of hardship, struggle, and pain when I see nothing but uncharted water on every side, I put my trust in God. I am confident in what He can and will do to support me.

To help me remember, I wrote Jeremiah 17:7-8 under the desk in my office.

But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.

Roots of confidence

Clinging to the rock, I can wait confidently on God to work for good. There are three things I can do that help me:

  • Look behind remembering the faithfulness of God in my past and look ahead to the hope of heaven and seeing Jesus face-to-face.
  • Drink deeply from the living water. Read His Word and let Him calm my heart and mind with His peace that passes all understanding.
  • Be still and know He is God. His ways are not my ways. But He always has a plan based on love and good.

I am blessed by God when I trust in Him.

Prayer for Roots of Confidence

Lord, I cling to You like the trees to the rocky cliffs and send my roots to Your living water. Even in heat and drought, You provide. Bless me, God, with Your fruit of the Spirit during hard times as I put my confidence and trust in You. Amen.
