A brand new start. Van and I moved from California to Arizona. We left the familiar behind and ventured into new territory. Excitement and anticipation fill our hearts, along with a little trepidation. But we knew one thing remained the same: we would continue to serve the Lord. Retirement didn’t mean sitting on the front porch, watching the world go by. Instead, we want to be faithful to God by finding ways to serve Him.
We attended our church in California, Hillside Community Church, for over 25 years. Both of us had people and ministries we loved. For me, GriefShare and CARE team visitation, and for Van Hillside Handymen. Where would we fit into a new church? Experience taught us to pray and wait on the Lord to show us where He wanted us to serve, rather than show up expecting to plunge right into what we thought was best.
But we want to do more than just serve God through church ministries. We long for our home to be dedicated to serving God in all areas. In the entryway, we wrote Joshua 24:15
As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
A reminder that as we leave our home, we step into our community.
Whether we greet our next door neighbor, interact with the cashier at the market, have lunch with friends, or attend a worship service, we keep in mind that in all things, we serve the Lord. He is first in everything we do.
Serving the Lord may mean a kind word. Praying with someone in distress. Lending a hand on a project. Making a meal for a neighbor who’s sick. It may be as simple as talking to a neighbor and getting to know them. Making them feel important because we took the time to say hello and listen.
And serving isn’t limited to our community. We want to serve one another, looking for ways to build each other up. Offer assistance in a project or give encouragement during tough times.
Prayer to Serve: Joshua 24:15
Lord, we want to serve you in our home. Help us follow the example of Jesus, who came not to be served, but to serve. No matter what we see around us, we declare with Joshua “as for me and my house, I will serve the Lord.” We will follow Your commands. Help us to be sensitive to the needs of each other and serve one another in love. Show us where and how to serve in our church and our community so You are glorified in our home. Amen.
